Coming up: History News This Week - Episode: 005

Namaste Friends. My name is 'Shinil Subramanian Payamal' and you are listening to the Historylogy podcast.

Welcome to the 5th episode of History News This Week. Please note that History News This Week will be online every Sunday at 09:30 PM Indian Standard Time i.e. 04:00 PM GMT.

First up is news from the eastern Indian state of Odisha where archaeologists have unearthed a statue of an elephant they think was carved about 2,300 years ago, when Buddhism was the main religion in the region.

Second news is from a prehistoric site in Israel where archaeologists have unearthed a collection of 12,000-year-old flutes carved out of bird bones. When played, the artifacts mimic the calls of certain birds of prey. Once used by the Natufians, these are some of the oldest musical instruments in the world.

Third news item from several prehistoric sites in Greece reveal that our human ancestors hunted hippos and elephants between 280,000 and 700,000 years ago. The oldest site pushes back the earliest known hominin presence in the region by up to 250,000 years.

Fourth, about 1,700 years ago, a wealthy Roman family was buried with a bizarre material — liquid gypsum — poured over their corpses. Now, a noninvasive 3D scan of this burial has revealed the insides of their burial cocoon.

Fifth, the pharaoh Tutankhamun, also known as King Tut, is arguably the best-known ruler in ancient Egyptian history. And while much has been written about the royal youth, who held the throne from about the age of 9 until his death a decade later around 1323 B.C., his actual appearance is still a matter of debate.

But now, a new facial approximation provides a glimpse of what the historical figure may have looked like, revealing new insight into some of the former king's more peculiar facial characteristics.

Sixth, researchers flying drones have discovered 7,000-year-old cave paintings in the mountains of Spain. It's one of the first instances of drones being used to find cave paintings.

Seventh, Vadnagar in Gujarat, India to soon get an archaeological experiential museum with immersive AR and VR experiences.

Eighth and last news item for this week is about whether Polynesian voyagers reached the Americas before Columbus? The Polynesians were expert sailors—and research suggests they landed in the Americas centuries before Columbus.

Coming to the latest book release, it is ‘Soldiers Don't Go Mad: A Story of Brotherhood, Poetry, and Mental Illness During the First World War’ by Charles Glass. I will definitely review this book as and when I manage to get my hands on it.

History podcast recommendation of the week:

Stuff The British Stole’, this excellent, funny, fiery Australian podcast presented by Marc Fennell is a guide to the history of the modern-day Commonwealth via exactly what the title says: stuff the British stole during imperial times. And nobody knows this better than we here in India. After all, the British stole the most from India!

I will provide links to all the news items, book and podcast mentioned above in the show notes. Please feel free to check them out.
