Coming up: History News This Week - Episode: 013

Namaste Friends. My name is 'Shinil Subramanian Payamal' and you are listening to the Historylogy podcast.

Welcome to the 13th episode of History News This Week. Please note that History News This Week will be online every Sunday at 09:30 PM Indian Standard Time i.e. 04:00 PM GMT.

This week is an interesting mix of news from around the world along with some very good articles. Let’s start!

1. The exact location of what is thought to be the first English slave fort in Africa may have been found - the BBC has been hearing about the significance of the discovery in Ghana.

2. In the late 1800s, archaeologists discovered an arrowhead at a Bronze Age dwelling in Mörigen, Switzerland. In the years since, the 3,000-year-old artifact has been part of the collection at the Bern Historical Museum. Now, a new analysis reveals that the object is no ordinary arrowhead — it was crafted from a meteorite that crashed to Earth 3,500 years ago, according to a study published in the September issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science.

3. Archaeologists in Spain have unearthed an "exceptional" mosaic featuring the mythical gorgon Medusa in the remains of a lavish house from the Roman era.

4. Researchers created a facial approximation of a 45,000-year-old individual who is believed to be the oldest anatomically modern human ever to be genetically sequenced.

5. Even as the proposed structural inspection of the Puri Jagannath Temple’s Ratna Bhandar is likely to be conducted during Rath Yatra in July next year, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Friday said its immediate focus is train its staff on the operation of the 3D laser scanner, which will be used during the structural test.

6. The British Library has found censored details in the official account of Elizabeth I’s reign which suggest that King James I may have tried to have her assassinated and that he fabricated an account in which she named him her successor.

Coming to the articles and pictorials, the first one is titled:

How Have Conspiracy Theories Changed the Course of History?

Thriving in troubled times, the allure of a good conspiracy theory has proved irresistible whenever and wherever authorities are not trusted. What’s the damage?

The 2nd is titled ‘In Pictures: The protectors of a 7,000-year-old faith’, it is about Lalish which is a tiny mountain village in Kurdistan with a population of just 25. It is to the Yazidis what Mecca is to Muslims or Jerusalem is to the followers of Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

The third is titled ‘The Tigris: The river that birthed civilisation’. This once-mighty river is where humans first developed agriculture, writing and the wheel. But now the lifeblood of the ancient world is under threat.

Latest book release of the week:

Prisoners of the Castle: An Epic Story of Survival and Escape from Colditz, the Nazis' Fortress Prison’ by Ben Macintyre is now available for order.
