This week I have five interesting pieces of news items from the world of History and Archaeology followed by three lists of the best history books released in 2023. Let’s start!
1st ─ New evidence suggests Harappan civilisation is 7,000 to 8,000 years’ old
Researchers from Deccan College, Pune along with the Central Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have established that human remains discovered at an ancient site of Rakhigarhi – a village in the Hisar district of Haryana – date back around 8,000 years. The discovery has been made during the third phase of excavations carried out by the ASI along with various teams across the country, including researchers from Deccan College, Pune.
2nd ─ 4000-year-old palace discovered in ancient Chinese walled city
Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of a 4,000-year-old palace in an ancient Chinese walled city.
The structure was found at Xinmi – a known ancient walled city that is believed to have been constructed during the Xia dynasty, approximately between 2070-1600 B.C. Xia is referenced in legends and is arguably the first Chinese dynasty in history.
3rd ─ Top secret WW2 SAS raid is revealed at last
A top secret SAS (Special Air Service) raid in which commandos stole a train and drove it behind enemy lines to carry out a major prison break in the Second World War has finally been revealed after 80 years.
British and French soldiers landed in Taranto in Italy in September 1943 and stormed the local railway station to seize the locomotive.
They drove it 50 miles deep into Nazi-occupied territory to a concentration camp where hundreds of prisoners, including Jewish civilians, were being kept in savage conditions.
4th ─ 2,000-year-old 'celestial calendar' discovered in ancient Chinese tomb
Archaeologists in China have unearthed a mysterious set of rectangular wooden pieces linked to an ancient astronomical calendar. The artifacts were discovered inside an exceptionally well-preserved 2,000-year-old tomb in the southwest of the country.
5th ─ Remote Maya Campsite Found in Southeastern Mexico
Newsweek reports that a remote 57-acre Maya campsite with traces of several structures, mounds of ash and charcoal, and pottery fragments has been discovered on the Yucatán Peninsula by a team of researchers led by archaeologist Mario Alberto Garrido.
