Coming up in this episode: Reasons for the defeat of the Marathas and the rise of the British.

Namaste friends, I am Shinil Subramanian Payamal and you are listening to the Historylogy Podcast.

In this episode, I am going to talk briefly about the reasons for the defeat of the Marathas. Remember, the English did not win this country from the Mughals but they won it from the Marathas. The powerful Mughal Empire which was destroyed by the Marathas was conquered by the English, which means that the Marathas lacked some of the good qualities the English had and the English did ot hae some of the vices of the Marathas. Here is an important excerpt from the reasons given by Historian Vasudeoshastri Khare for the defeat of the Marathas. The following excerpt will explain the reasons for the defeat of the Marathas and will also provide guidance on what to do in the future. This quote by Vasudeoshastri Khare bears notice:

"How did the English take our Pune-Satara and why were we not able to take their Madras-Calcutta? Not an iota of national pride, lack of ability to work together unitedly, limitless greed for selfish resources, laziness, disregard, the habit of going by others' thinking, and other vices, are rampant and well established in our society and they have led to the downfall of our kingdom. An eastern kingdom so weakened by such flaws cannot last in opposition to any advanced western nation. Had Hindustan not been taken by the English, it would definitely have been taken by the French. When two vessels clash against each other, it certain which one of them will break, the clay one or the metal one! The present circumstances are such that one can either compete with the westerners or then serve under them! It is the same in politics, business, arts, and science. If we have the guts to compete with the westerners, then we must shed our vices. Earlier, we had an independent kingdom and we lost it because of these failings, if we do not understand this and become alert, achieving new independence will also be futile, this wisdom taught by history must continue to echo in our ears."

As we can see, it's now over 75 years since India got independence and we still refuse to learn from history.
