Coming up: A review of the book 'The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon' written by David Grann.
Namaste Friends. My name is 'Shinil Subramanian Payamal' and you are listening to the Historylogy podcast.
Before I proceed, a full disclosure: This book was bought with my own money and not been provided to me by the author or publisher.
Little bit about the author:
David Grann is the author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Killers of the Flower Moon and The Lost City of Z. Killers of the Flower Moon was a finalist for the National Book Award and won an Edgar Allan Poe Award. He is also the author of The White Darkness and the collection The Devil and Sherlock Holmes. Grann’s investigative reporting has garnered several honours, including a George Polk Award. He lives with his wife and children in New York.
Let me read a brief description of the book:
QUOTE
After stumbling upon a hidden trove of diaries, acclaimed writer David Grann set out to determine what happened to the British explorer Percy Fawcett and his quest for the Lost City of Z. For centuries Europeans believed the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, concealed the glittering kingdom of El Dorado. Thousands had died looking for it, leaving many scientists convinced that the Amazon was truly inimical to humankind. In 1925 Fawcett ventured into the Amazon to find an ancient civilization, hoping to make one of the most important discoveries in history. Then he vanished. Over the years countless perished trying to find evidence of his party and the place he called “The Lost City of Z.”
In this masterpiece, journalist David Grann interweaves the spellbinding stories of Fawcett’s quest for “Z” and his own journey into the deadly jungle.
UNQUOTE
This is the third David Grann book I have read. The first two being:
1. Killers of the Flower Moon
2. The Wager
The book seems like a perfect script for an Indiana Jones movie. It has all the elements for it. From rainforests to hunter-gatherer tribes to a lost city, this book will not disappoint you if you are looking for an awesome adventure filled ride.
The main protagonist of the story is Percy Fawcett, “the last of the great Victorian explorers who ventured into uncharted realms with little more than a machete, a compass and an almost divine sense of purpose.”
In the course of his travels in the Amazon rainforest, Fawcett hears whispers of a kingdom, a civilization overgrown and forgotten. He began spotting clues everywhere, in the customs of the Indians, in oral histories and legends.
I would personally recommend this book just for the survival tips you will learn from it. E.g. the medical tips on pages 72 and 73 on how to remove decaying tooth. What should be done if one ingests poison? How to survive a venomous snakebite? And also what to do when one feels terribly thirsty or hungry.
Since I want to keep this review spoiler free, I won’t tell you whether Grann actually finds the Lost of City of Z in the end or comes to know what really happened to Fawcett.
I give this book a rating of 4.5/5 and I highly recommend it.
The book is available for around Rs. 750/- on Amazon India and for Rs. 629/- on Flipkart. And it is available for $13.05 USD on Amazon USA. The book is also available in Kindle format and in Audible format but for some reason, the Audible version is not available on Audible India. I have given the respective buy links in the show notes. Please check them out for the latest prices.
