Coming up: What did Rajputs like Maha Singh in Aurangzeb’s court think of Shivaji Maharaj?

Namaste Friends. My name is 'Shinil Subramanian Payamal' and you are listening to the Historylogy podcast.

I came across this interesting piece of history on page 34 of the book 'The Legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji – From Kingdom to Empire 1600 - 1818' written by Dr. Kedar Phalke which I had reviewed on 13th February, 2023.

The House of Bhonsle (or Bhonsale, Bhosale, Bhosle) to which Shivaji Maharaj belonged to, is a prominent Indian Marathi imperial house. They claimed descent from the Rajput Sisodia Dynasty. Rajputs on the other hand, according to some historians, have this habit of trying to find a Rajput link with anyone who is brave and fearless. It wasn’t any different with Shivaji as well.

During his imprisonment in Agra, Shivaji had around him Maha Singh Shekhawat, Ballu Shah, Tej Singh, and Rana Singh. They have praised Shivaji. Maha Singh said to Tej Singh:

“Shivaji is very clear, he speaks the right words, after which nobody needs to say anything more on the subject. He is a good genuine Rajput and we have found him just what he was reported to be. He tells us such appropriate things marked by the characteristics qualities (or spirit) of a Rajput, that if they are born in mind they will prove useful someday. It is sheer destiny that has brought him here. But there were four good men of high rank like you around Mirza Raja, why did you not speak to him against sending him into Aurangzeb’s claws? You should have reasoned with and dissuaded the Maharaja.”

To this Tej Singh replied, ‘Mirza Raja listens to only Udayraj Munshi, he does not listen to important thakurs either.’ Now everyone had started feeling amiable about Shivaji. Aurangzeb too got to know of this. He barred Shivaji from meeting Ram Singh.
