Namaste friends, I am Shinil Subramanian Payamal and you are listening to the Historylogy Podcast.

What if the Marathas had won the Battle of Panipat in 1761... As we all know, there is no place for 'ifs and buts' in History, inspite of that there is no harm in imagining the same. Even the great historian Jadunath Sarkar could not resist this temptation. He says 'What a change would have taken place in India after 1760! We can easily imagine what a difference it would have made if the Marathas would have achieved grand success on 14th January.'

There is no denying the fact that Marathas recovered in the next ten years, whatever they had lost in the battle of Panipat but they suffered two irrecoverable losses. The first was the loss of life. Young, dashing, valiant Marathas like Sadashivrao Bhau, Vishwasrao, Jankoji Shinde and Ibrahim Khan Gardi got killed. They would have ensured a brighter future for the Maratha Empire. This loss of life was irreversible and could never be made up. The second loss was that the prestige of the Maratha Empire suffered due to the defeat at Panipat. That had detrimental effect on the politics of North India and was obvious. The credit for compensating the losses incurred at Panipat goes to Madhavrao Peshwa. This young Maratha youth firmly held his ground on the battlefield and was equally firm in his administration. He drafted his military strategy very carefully. He first defeated Haidar in Karnataka and then he made his moves from the Deccan to control the politics in the North and gained control over the political situation, but destiny had something different in mind. This brave heart had just about set the Maratha Empire in order when he died at the very young age of twenty-seven. Madhavrao had ensured a smooth administration of the Empire but after his death there was disarray in the State and sloppiness crept in the military affairs, which remained till the end.
