Coming up: What is the history of the Sayyid dynasty in India?

Namaste Friends. My name is 'Shinil Subramanian Payamal' and you are listening to the Historylogy podcast.

I came across this interesting piece of history in the footnote of page 128 of the book 'Tears of the Begums: Stories of Survivors of the Uprising of 1857' (originally in Urdu as Begumat ke Aansoo) written by Khwaja Hasan Nizami and translated by Rana Safvi.

First of all, who is a Sayyid (also spelled as Saiyed, Syed, Sayyed, Sayyid, etc…)?

Prophet Muhammad had only one surviving daughter, named Fatima. She was also called Syeda. She was married to Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth of the rightly guided caliphs. Hazrat Ali, as he is also called, was considered to be the first of the infallible imams or leaders of the Shia sect of Muslims. Their descendants are called saiyeds (male) or saidani (female). The famous battle of Karbala where their son Imam Hussain was martyred along with his friends and male members is commemorated in the Islamic month of Muharram, every year by holding assemblies in his name. Even though Islam has established a classless society the saiyeds as descendants of the Prophet hold a high position and are generally respected.

Now, coming to the history of the Sayyids in India. The Sayyid dynasty was the fourth dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, with four rulers ruling from 1414 to 1451 for 37 years. The first ruler of the dynasty, Khizr Khan, who was the Timurid vassal of Multan, conquered Delhi in 1414, while the rulers proclaimed themselves the Sultans of the Delhi Sultanate under Mubarak Shah, which succeeded the Tughlaq dynasty and ruled the Sultanate until they were displaced by the Lodi dynasty in 1451.
